Sci-Fi Author Liu Cixin Used ChatGPT to Compose Speech

Date:

Renowned science-fiction author Liu Cixin recently revealed that he utilized chatbot ChatGPT to help write speeches that he delivered at a conference. During a livestreamed interview with Yu Minhong, founder of New Oriental Education & Technology Group, Liu explained that he was crunched for time and the chatbot did very well with its results. Liu, who won a Hugo Award, believes that AI has the ability to replace certain human activities, however, he doesn’t see it creating AI-ruled humans like what happens in science fiction. At the China Science Fiction Convention (CSFC) 2023 in Beijing, Liu touched on the subject of artificial intelligence, stating that sooner or later AI would replace or sideline human writers. Though he doesn’t see science-fiction writers disappearing altogether, their works are likely to become comparable to traditional Chinese shadow puppetry. His thoughts echo those of Chinese Nobel laureate novelist Mo Yan, who also reportedly used ChatGPT to write a speech, citing time constraints as the reason. Since its public release last November, the popularity of ChatGPT has led to numerous major tech companies including Alibaba, Baidu, and Google unveiling their own generative AI tools.
