TSMC Begins 2nm Pre-Production Stage

Date:

Taiwan’s leading chip manufacturer, TSMC, has initiated pre-production operations for its 2nm process, aiming to reach mass production by 2025. According to Taiwan-based media outlet Economic Daily News, the company plans to use an advanced AI system to enhance energy efficiency and accelerate efficiency. Apple and Nvidia are among the expected first batch of customers for the 2nm production, putting pressure on competitors like Samsung. However, Samsung also expects to deliver 2nm chips to mass production by 2025 using a 1.4nm process by 2027.

The production base for TSMC’s 2nm will be established at Hsinchu Science Park’s Fab 20 with Taichung Science Park expansion covering six phases of engineering and laying the foundation for mass production in 2025. According to the report, TSMC will begin test production for hundreds of 2nm chips this year, paving the way for mass production in the near future.

Samsung was the first chip manufacturer to widely employ 3nm processes, but TSMC’s 2nm plan could potentially lead to head-on competition with the South Korean company. However, TSMC did not provide specific details on the matter but did assure that the development of 2nm technology is on track.

The race to produce the smallest chips continues as companies aim to create products that are more powerful and energy-efficient, making them an essential component of modern tech. With Apple and Nvidia among the many companies in the market, the demand for smaller, but more powerful chips has never been higher. However, both TSMC and Samsung have their work cut out for them in meeting the industry’s high expectations for technological innovation.
