U.S. District Judge Brantley Starr banned the use of artificial intelligence due to its tendency to invent facts or hallucinate. Judge Starr requires lawyers to sign a certificate when filing a legal brief that indicates either no part of the document was generated by an AI tool or that a human has confirmed any AI-generated text. The ruling came after a lawyer representing a man suing an airline used AI tool ChatGPT to prepare a legal brief, which contained a number of false facts. While AI tools are useful for generating standard documents, such as form divorces, legal briefing is not its forte. Judge Starr said generative AI is currently prone to hallucinations, making problems appear real and quoting made-up sources. While AI has a role to play in the justice system, it is not dependable enough for legal representation.
