Date:

Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission has issued a warning to OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed Artificial Intelligence (AI) company, asking them to limit the collection of sensitive data without the users’ permission. The regulator has stated that it may further act on concerns if the company does not comply with these guidelines. The watchdog has also emphasized the need to strike a balance between privacy concerns and the benefits of generative AI such as accelerating innovation and tackling climate change. Japan is the third-largest traffic source to OpenAI’s website and the CEO, Sam Altman, has previously met with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida with a plan to expand in Japan. OpenAI CEO has also stated that the company has no plans to exit Europe despite earlier concerns.
