Character.AI, an AI chatbot startup backed by a16z, has reported over 1.7 million new installs within its first week on the market. The mobile app offers customizable AI companions with distinct personalities and the ability for users to create their own characters. The company was founded by Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, both of whom previously led a team of researchers at Google in building LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications). Character.AI has been widely popular, especially in larger Android markets like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Brazil, and the US. The team has been busy launching its premium service c.ai+ and now has a strategic partnership with Google Cloud for building and training its AI models.

Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas are the co-founders of Character.AI. Both of them previously led a team of researchers at Google that built LaMDA.
