To find out more about ChatGPT’s impact on education, students were asked to use it throughout the semester, and the results were analyzed at the end. The students found ChatGPT to be user-friendly, easy to use, and efficient, which ultimately improved their performance in class. Furthermore, ChatGPT helps learners achieve their objectives and improve their learning outcomes while saving them time and increasing class efficiency.
However, students had some reservations about ChatGPT’s accuracy and reliability, particularly when it comes to the current lack of up-to-date information. Another concern is the potential misuse of ChatGPT, incorrect or missing citations, plagiarism and students lack of confidence in using it in the academic context due to lack of clear policies. Nonetheless, accuracy issues should decrease as the algorithm develops and the system is updated.
The study also compared ChatGPT to traditional search engines like Google and found that students preferred ChatGPT for efficiency, idea generation, and text-based tasks. However, Google was preferred for accuracy, search filters, and credibility of sources, as well as for more sophisticated data such as images, videos, or shopping.
Given the insights gained from this study, educators should consider using both ChatGPT and Google in class, as they complement each other and provide students with the best of both tools. Assignments should focus on events that occurred after September 2021, fewer details about smaller companies, and non-text-based tasks to limit potential misuse of ChatGPT.
