From Call of Duty to Fantasy: The development shift behind Immortals of Aveum

Ascendant Studios, the developer behind Immortals of Aveum, a new single-player fantasy game, is set to debut on PlayStation5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on July 20. The game has taken inspiration from Bret Robbins’ time as a senior creative director at Sledgehammer Games, which worked on Call of Duty titles. He wanted to create a familiar world to the first-person shooter players who enjoy Call of Duty but within a fantasy game using magic spells. Immortals of Aveum has taken inspiration from other games too, such as BioShock, to establish its vibrant colors. The game is about 20 hours long, featuring different bosses, high-quality graphics, and a rich lore. It has taken Ascendant Studios five years to make this game, growing from a one-person company to employing over 200 people.

Bret Robbins, CEO of Ascendant and game director of Immortals of Aveum, dreamed of creating a first-person shooter game with magic spells. He had plenty of experience in this area from his time as a senior creative director at Sledgehammer Games, which specialized in Call of Duty games such as WWII. Robbins initiated Ascendant Studios and started work on Immortals of Aveum five years ago with a team of around 30-40 people. Today, the development team has grown to over 200 people.
