Biden’s Team Divided Over Risks of ChatGPT AI Rules in the EU

The Biden administration is split on how to handle regulation of new artificial intelligence (AI) tools, with some officials supporting the EU’s proposed strong measures and others opposing them. The EU has proposed subjecting generative AI, which enables technology like language processing tool ChatGPT and image creator Dall-E, to additional regulations adding reporting requirements for such models. This focus on regulation of AI matters greatly as Congress is unlikely to implement binding rules. Instead, the EU will be the first to have a say on the foundation models used by tech giants to develop the next frontier of AI. However, some US officials are warning that restricting foundation models could harm US competitiveness.
