US judge bans ChatGPT-created content in court proceedings

Date:

A US federal judge has barred the use of AI-generated content in his court. Texas federal judge Brantley Starr has decreed that any attorney attending his court must confirm that no portion of their filing was composed by generative artificial intelligence (AI) or that any language so drafted had been checked by a human. Starr cited hallucinations and bias as problems with current AI platforms. Machine platforms like ChatGPT have been praised for their proficiency in form divorces, discovery requests and anticipated questions but their use in legal briefing is deemed to be unsuitable. Last week it emerged that a lawyer had been fooled by ChatGPT into thinking that citations the AI chatbot had supplied on behalf of a man suing Colombian airline Avianca were genuine. Six of the cases were proven to be bogus.
