Think ChatGPT Can Write as Well as a Human? My Students Disagree: A Commentary

Date:

Last semester, a writing class at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information included peer review sessions where students gave feedback on anonymized versions of their classmates’ writing assignments. During one workshop, the teacher secretly included a feature article that no one in the class had written. Upon reading it, many students commented that the writing was decent, logical in flow, and free of grammatical errors. Some students, however, shared their opinions that it was too dry, lacked personal touch and soul. Surprisingly, the feature article was written by ChatGPT, an AI chatbot that can generate original texts in various writing formats.

ChatGPT is a generative AI chatbot that is considered one of the fastest-growing online platforms in history. It hit 100 million monthly active users only two months after it was launched. It is a language model that can generate grammatically correct sentences and coherent text in seconds. With the ability to write in different styles, from poems to news articles, it is no wonder many people believe that the chatbot can write as well as a human writer.

Despite ChatGPT’s success, a few students have raised concerns. They believe that the chatbot’s writing lacked a personal touch that only comes from a human writer’s soul. While this may be a valid point, many users are grateful for the convenience and speed of ChatGPT.

In conclusion, ChatGPT’s AI technology has proven to be efficient in generating high-quality texts. It may have limitations in terms of creating a personal touch, but its impressive ability to produce quality writing quickly and accurately has made it a popular platform for many users. As AI continues to evolve, there is no telling what new capabilities it will possess. For now, ChatGPT demonstrates the potential for AI-generated writing.
