Date:

A New York law firm, Levidow, Levidow & Oberman, and two of their lawyers have been ordered by a senior federal judge, P. Kevin Castel, to explain why they submitted a brief containing references to fake cases. According to an affidavit filed by lawyer Steven A. Schwartz, who is representing plaintiff Roberto Mata in a lawsuit against airline Avianca Inc., ChatGPT provided the references to the fake cases. ChatGPT is a natural language processing AI chatbot, owned by OpenAI, that is designed to answer legal questions posed in plain English. Schwartz has been in practice for over 30 years and stated that he was unaware that the content he received from ChatGPT could be false.
