Provide Your Input to the White House on Rapidly Advancing AI Technology

Date:

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues its rapid growth, the White House is seeking your input and encouraging citizens to offer their comments. Until July 7, 2023, the public can provide their comments on any risks or opportunities presented by AI at the Federal eRulemaking Portal. This is all part of the White House’s efforts in creating a cohesive and comprehensive strategy to manage AI risks and take advantage of its opportunities.

The White House has released an updated roadmap for AI research funding and laid out several initiatives to address how potential risks can be managed. These initiatives follow after a meeting between White House officials, including Vice President Kamala Harris, and executives from leading AI companies to discuss the technology’s risks. VP Harris stated that the government won’t hesitate to regulate AI if it affects the economy or public safety.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Microsoft President Brad Smith have both expressed the need for regulation of AI, something the government is attempting to do in the form of a proposed “AI Bill of Rights” as well as rules for government employees regarding the use of AI.

The United Kingdom has also proposed its own offerings for AI regulation which would give many different regulators the power to create necessary rules for AI tools, products, and software. Any rules created have to fall in line with existing laws but the initiative should provide clarity to the industry.

Technology giant Microsoft, headed by Brad Smith, has recently taken a leadership role in developing ethical standards for AI, building an AI-based system that helps protect user data, and investing in the research and development needed to advance responsible technical innovation. Microsoft is committed to providing the public with responsible artificial intelligence solutions to help create a world where technology works for everyone.
