Canada’s Privacy Regulator Challenges OpenAI’s ChatGPT

Date:

Canada’s privacy watchdog is launching a joint investigation into the data collection and usage practices of OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, reported Reuters. This move places Canada at the forefront of examining the regulation of AI tools, as users of the ChatGPT chatbot experience a newfound AI race among key tech companies, such as Alphabet Inc and Meta.

The investigation will examine if OpenAI has legally collected personal information from Canadian residents through ChatGPT, in addition to if they have fulfilled obligations regarding transparency, access, accuracy, and accountability. OpenAI has not yet provided a response to Reuters’ request for comment.

OpenAI is a private company supported by Microsoft Corp. Last month, they released ChatGPT to the public for free, after which it gained widespread recognition due to its ability to generate articles, essays, jokes, and even poetry in response to user prompts.

This Canadian investigation shows that governments are stepping up efforts to develop regulations surrounding this innovative technology, to ensure that Canadian residents are adequately protected against potential misuse. However, as the investigation is currently underway, no further findings have been released. The commission’s office promises to publish the findings of this investigation once it is completed.
