Cybercriminals Exploiting ChatGPT to Spread Malware via Hijacked Facebook Accounts

Date:

Criminals have been exploiting the popularity of ChatGPT to spread malware via hijacked Facebook accounts. This alarming trend was uncovered by CloudSEK in their investigation, which unveiled 13 pages with over five lakh followers containing Indian content, vulnerable to malicious software. Such sophisticated tactics leave users open to a range of threats, including the detection and theft of sensitive personal information, system information, and payment details.

CloudSEK’s cyber intelligence analyst, Bablu Kumar, urged individuals to be aware of malicious activities on platforms such as Facebook, in order to avoid falling victim to similar attacks. In addition, CloudSEK has warned of 25 websites, which imitate the OpenAI.com website to dupe unsuspecting users into downloading and installing dangerous, potentially destructive software.

When discussing the risks posed by such a cyber attack, Kumar points out how the malware is not only capable of stealing private information from the device, but also has replication capabilities, enabling it to travel through removable media and take over a system. Such malware has the potential to remain on the device for extended periods, presenting an even higher risk to user privacy and security.

Given the increasing complexity of these attacks, CloudSEK encourages users to take extra caution, remain vigilant, and protect their confidential data and information. CloudSEK is an established cyber security provider with over a decade of experience with protecting organizations and individuals from cyber threats, malicious content, and attacks. The company offers a full suite of security solutions, including threat detection, incident response, and malware forensics, to ensure proper protection online. As a trusted, global leader in security and cyber resilience, CloudSEK continues to remain at the forefront of protecting users from sophisticated attacks.
