ChatGPT, an AI text generator developed by OpenAI, had a major outage that started before 7:23 A.M ET and lasted up until 8:27 A.M. ET on Thursday. Reports of the issue first began surfacing shortly after 5 A.M. ET, according to Downdetector. OpenAI acknowledged the issue and worked to identify the source of the outage. Through investigating the cause of the issue, OpenAI found that elevated database CPU usage was causing the site outage and the issue was addressed.
OpenAI is no stranger to outages. Within the past few months, the chatbot has had more that one major outage a month. When ChatGPT was released in November 30, 2022, it’s fast growth rate was to blame for a string of outages, eventually leading the company to successfully scale up its capability by some metrics.
OpenAI is a research organization and company with a mission to “solve the most challenging artificial intelligence problems.” Incorporated in 2018, the company has made great strides in researching AI capabilities in language and image generation, as well as developing applications that analyze action and generate human-like text.
