Samsung Stopping Use of ChatGPT After Engineers Utilize It to Mend Proprietary Code

Date:

Samsung recently announced that it is banning the use of ChatGPT, a popular generative AI platform that can be used for tasks such as translation, summarizing notes and fixing code. It was discovered that engineers had been using it to fix proprietary code, leading the company to fear that ChatGPT could store internal data and not give them the option to delete it prior to it being shared externally. Employees who continue to use ChatGPT face disciplinary action, including termination of employment.

In order to fill the gap, Samsung is creating its own in-house tools to replace the common ChatGPT uses. This news follows similar bans and restrictions of the platform from other large companies such as Walmart, Verizon, and large banks like JP Morgan Chase.

ChatGPT has seen a surge in popularity as many engineers utilize it for speeding up their coding process. It has even been used to create entire websites by savvy users. OpenAI recently released a “Incognito” mode in order to keep the data secure before potentially sharing it externally.

Samsung headquarters is now carefully reviewing their security measures to create a more secure environment for its employees while ensuring productivity and efficiency. This move to restrict the use of generative AI is both interesting and indicative of technology’s rapid advancement. In turn, it forces companies such as Samsung to not only embrace the quickly evolving tech landscape, but adequately prepare for potential issues surrounding the use of various AI platforms.
