OpenAI Calls for Human Regulation of AI, Proposes a Regulatory Body

Date:

OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, is calling for the regulation of AI. In a blog post written by its founder Sam Altman, President Greg Brockman, and Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, the California-based company proposed the establishment of a global authority like the International Atomic Energy Agency to handle the regulatory side of AI.

OpenAI has a three-step agenda to mitigate any risks associated with artificial superintelligent systems of the future. The first step involves coordination among makers of AI systems such as Bard, Anthropic, and Bing, either through governments setting up a regulatory system or AI manufacturers agreeing among themselves to limit AI growth. Next, the company calls for an international regulatory body similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency, with the authority to inspect and test compliance to standards, among other roles. Finally, the ChatGPT maker will work to make artificial intelligence systems in line with human values and intent.

OpenAI was founded in 2015 by technology entrepreneur and investor, Sam Altman, and research scientist, Ilya Sutskever. Combined with Greg Brockman, the trio have grown OpenAI into a company focused on discovering and enacting the path to safe artificial general intelligence (AGI). Since its inception, OpenAI has attracted investments from tech giants such as Alphabet Inc., Microsoft, Salesforce, and Amazon Web Services.

The person mentioned Sam Altman is an American entrepreneur and investor, and has served as President of Y Combinator since 2014 and has been described as “the closest thing Silicon Valley has to a leader” by The New York Times. Altman is a known venture capitalist and is the co-author (with Greg Brockman) of the book “Startup Playbook”. He is also the founder of OpenAI, a research laboratory developing artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies. Altman has invested in over 200 start-ups, including startups such as Airbnb, SurveyMonkey, Stripe, Optimizely and Coinbase. Altman is an advocate for the advancement of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and is the Chairman of the Board of OpenAI, where he focuses on the long-term vision of the company.
