OpenAI Ready to Launch Open-Source AI Model: Report

Date:

OpenAI, founded by Sam Altman, is getting ready to release an open-source AI model, The Information reported. The plan came to light after the release of the popular AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT, comprising of GPT-4 and GPT-3.5. While earlier iterations of GPT were open-source, little is known about the new model.

The decision to release another open-source AI model comes amid the boom of open-source development, partly spurred on by Meta allowing access to powerful machine-learning models. Despite the competitive landscape, the company is pushing forward with the release, although no timeline has been given for it.

The release of the new model is a positive move for OpenAI, which is facing stark competition from free alternatives to mainstream models. According to a leaked document from a Googler, the company is aware that their rivals – both Google and Microsoft-backed OpenAI – could potentially win the AI arms race.

Altman’s OpenAI has been active in the AI industry since 2016. A computing non-profit organization, they aim to benefit humanity by advancing the field of AI using methods which are based on values of privacy, safety, transparency, and the equitable and responsible use of AI.

Sam Altman currently serves as President of OpenAI. An entrepreneur and investor, he is best known as the co-founder and former CEO of Y Combinator. He has also been influential in various startup investments, including Airbnb, Dropbox, Stripe, and Reddit. Altman is a vocal advocate of the use of technology for positive change.
