AI presents numerous opportunities for India — in healthcare, education, agriculture, and finance — to maximize the economic and social benefits it can extend to its population. India has already established a national strategy for AI to encourage investment and innovation in the sector, and set up various research institutions like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore as well as research labs like Microsoft India and IBM India.
India needs to adopt a multi-pronged strategy that includes investment in research and development, skilled workforce, regulatory framework, and industry collaboration to gain maximum benefits from AI. The government has to foster collaboration between academia and industry, provide training programs to upskill the existing workforce, and establish clear guidelines for data protection, AI ethics, and accountability.
