Discussing the Impact of ChatGPT on Education and Law: Co-hosted by HBKU College of Law and College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) recently celebrated the latest edition of its Law & Tech Talks series, a panel discussion about the potential implications of AI-powered language generation, ChatGPT. The discussion was jointly organized by its College of Law and College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS).

Opening the event was a welcome address from Susan L. Karamanian, the Dean of the College of Law. Moderating the panel was Georgios Dimitropoulos, an Associate Professor of HBKU College of Law. Joining the discussion as panelists were: Dr. Michael J. Benedik, HBKU’s Provost, Dr. Roberto Di Pietro, Professor of HBKU College of Science and Engineering, Dr. George Mikros, Professor of CHSS, and Dr. Richard Steinberg, Visiting Professor at College of Law, and Jonathan D. Varat Endowed Professor of Law and Professor of Political Science at the University of California Los Angeles.

The panelists discussed the use of ChatGPT from the perspectives of computer science, education, and law. They explored the potential impact of AI-powered language generation on communication, and looked into the challenges of using AI in legal settings, as well as the future of written essay assessments.

HBKU College of Law’s Law & Tech Talks series is a platform that supports engaging debates around legal challenges of relevance to Qatar and beyond, with a future-oriented mind. This platform allows the college’s faculty to share their expertise on contemporary legal matters and latest technological advancements.

As for the CHSS, it was established with a vision to give society in Qatar and the world transformational educational experiences that bring together many different disciplines. CHSS aims to create an academic hub that promotes an understanding of the importance of the rule of law in todays disruptive world.
