OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s Views on Remote Work in the Technology Industry

Date:

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently spoke at a conference organised by Stripe fintech and shared his views on remote working being one of the “biggest mistakes of the tech industry”. According to Altman, while technology has come a long way, it is still not suitable enough to enable remote work, especially when it comes to startups. He mentioned the experiment of fully remote working was a mistake and the related tech industry should learn a valuable lesson from it.

Many tech companies around the globe and their leaders have expressed their concerns on remote working conditions, terming it a major drawback due to lack of creativity, team-building problems and delayed outcomes on projects. Indian IT majors such as Wipro, who voiced their problems against moonlighting (simultaneously working for more than one organisation), identified it as one major issue of remote working. Altman has also pointed out that remote working can lead to confusion when it comes to product development.

Meanwhile, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna recently stated, as per Bloomberg report, that he would not be forcing any staff members to come into the office any time soon; however, those who do not come in will have to face difficulties in getting promoted, especially within managerial roles. He stressed that people managers should at least try and meet their teams in person every now and then for better coordination.
