Google and ChatGPT, two Silicon Valley-based companies, are facing a major threat that could reduce their standing in the world of artificial intelligence. A leaked Google document has warned that an army of open source researchers is challenging the two companies’ dominance, creating sophisticated algorithms and tools at a much faster pace.
The internal document claims that Google and ChatGPT, owned by OpenAI, have been “squabbling” with each other and ignoring the true threat of open source AI researchers. Without a “moat” or alternative to protect them, the document warns that the companies are “lapping us”. Open source researchers are creating AI technology that can achieve the same results as Google, but for a fraction of the cost. In some cases, researchers have managed to develop AI applications that cost $100 while Google spent millions of dollars without the same success.
Aware of the rapidly changing landscape of AI research, the document suggests that Google should shift their focus to collaborate and learn from open source communities online. It further warns that the complexity of Google’s algorithms and frameworks – often used to protect proprietary secrets and algorithms – could be obstructing their progress and cost them dearly in the long run.
The leak of the Google document originated from a Discord server run by an anonymous user, which was then published by research firm Semi Analysis. Semi Analysis confirmed the document’s authenticity and that it indeed came from an internal Google researcher. However, Google has not publicly commented on the report or the claims it makes.
OpenAI is a research lab focused on artificial intelligence research, founded by Elon Musk and Sam Altman in 2015. It has invested heavily in the development of AI, creating ChatGPT which is a derivative of GPT-3, a powerful language model.
Google, on the other hand, has an array of AI products and services available for businesses and consumers, making them a leading AI provider globally. The company also has a principle of “responsible release” when it comes to introducing new products, ensuring they are safe and secure before launching them to the public.
It is clear that the AI race is becoming more competitive by the day. It will be interesting to see how both of these tech giants respond to the challenge, and what strategies they will employ to maintain their positions at the top.
