Mira Murati is a lesser-known figure in the artificial intelligence (AI) space, but a dynamic and conciliatory one. As leader of the development teams at OpenAI for ChatGPT and Dall-E, the American Chief Technology Officer (CTO) works hard to assure the public that AI can be used for positive outcomes, including for managing climate change or for medical advancement.
Murati’s AI journey began as a student at a university in the United States, and progressed at Tesla and then Leap Motion. After joining OpenAI in 2018, the 34-year-old has gone on to oversee the creation of ChatGPT, a revolutionary conversational robot, and the AI image generator Dall-E.
Murati has also been eager to bring ethics to the forefront, joining the board of directors of Unlearn.AI, a startup specialised in developing machine learning methods for use in medical diagnosis and treatment. In an interview with Time, Murati sought to assuage public concerns, saying “There are a ton of questions around societal impact and there are a lot of ethical and philosophical questions that we need to consider.”
A lover of Radiohead, Stanley Kubrick, this self-professed AI enthusiast believes we can use the technology for the betterment of mankind.
OpenAI, itself, is a research laboratory specialising in AI, founded in 2015 and headquartered in San Francisco, California. Led by CEO and co-founder Sam Altman, OpenAI works on artificial general intelligence in the hope of advancing digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole. Through the release of projects like Jukebox and GPT-3, OpenAI is pushing the boundaries of AI and robotic development, with Mira Murati playing a key role in the organisation’s development teams.
