Arizona State University has taken an innovative approach to learning with their new course called Basic Prompt Engineering with ChatGPT: An Introduction. Developed and instructed by Andrew Maynard, a professor in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society, the course is unique in that it’s the first of its kind at ASU, and will be taught with the new artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is driving a revolution in the way we process and understand information. The technology is capable of quickly spitting out a sizable amount of data on practically any subject, provided it is prompted properly. It is for this reason that prompt engineering skills are becoming increasingly sought after and beneficial for students in any major.

Fortunately, the one-credit course from ASU delves into how to use ChatGPT, as well as prompting techniques, societal implications and the broader context within which the technology is being developed and used. The experience is made even better with a hands-on approach and the guidance of Professor Maynard. With the growing demand for prompt engineers come six-figure salaries, and through this class, students can gain a competitive edge in the job market.

The class is offered through ASU Online and as an iCourse, beginning June 29th with Session B. This is a perfect opportunity for any student looking to advance their skills and start a unique and lucrative career.

OpenAI, the company behind the technology, released ChatGPT in November 2022 and its popularity exploded soon after. Web searches for “prompt engineering” increased by as much as 30x in the early days of 2023, indicating the rising need for prompt engineers.
