Nuview is a geospatial technology company that has recently emerged from stealth. It aims to build out a constellation of 20 commercial satellites outfitted with its proprietary lidar system and map the entire land surface of the Earth with lidar annually. This is an ambitious plan that could potentially generate large profits if the company manages to pull it off. To achieve this, Nuview has reduced the size and weight of its system and unlocked the commercial potential of space-based lidar.
Clint Graumann is the founder and CEO of Nuview, coming from an Earth observation industry background. After recognizing the need for lidar data to be combined with datasets, he orchestrated the company’s first round of funding last year, and is currently in the middle of closing a second round. Nuview has landed over a billion dollars’ worth of “early adopter agreements” before even launched its first satellite, Mr. Spoc.
The advantages of lidar can revolutionize the remote sensing industry, from creating more data points for AI and machine learning applications to using them for civil agencies’ national mapping projects. As a result, Nuview has been able to attract many investors and has formed a diverse team of 21 employees to continue their project. The company is creating their own facility with optics, integration, and laser labs, and plans to deploy commercial satellites with their lidar system in tranches of five. Once they have successfully done so, they will have mapped the entire land surface of the Earth with lidar annually.
