Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of our lives, even though most of us may not realize it. With its increasing prominence, questions have arisen about the possible outcomes of AI. Will it threaten artists’ professions? Can AI genuinely create art? What about copyright and intellectual property issues?
However, AI-made artworks have already gained recognition. One such example is Refik Anadol’s ongoing art project Unsupervised displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It showcases an AI’s ability to create new visions based on existing works in the museum’s collection.
But, many artists have been exploring AI for years, way before reporters conversed with bots that proclaimed their love for them. These artists have delved into a range of themes like identity, language, and human-machine collaboration to create their unique take on AI.
For instance, Anna Ridler, an artist in London, uses AI to create flower bouquets, combining encrypted data from varied sources to bring out the unpredictability of nature. Meanwhile, Sougwen Chung, a Brooklyn-based artist, uses robots to draw live human portraits, exploring the boundaries between human and machine.
Similarly, TeYosh, a collective of artists in the Netherlands, creates music with an AI modelled on Mozart’s composition style. They believe that the relationship between humans and AI is an imbalance and seek to address it through their music.
Notably, a group of Swedish artists, Anny and Timo, create digital sculptures with AI-generated inputs, creating complex art pieces that are impossible to create manually.
AI’s use in creating art is also prompting exploration into its ethical implications. For instance, artist Fernando Orellana’s project The Death of Distance explores the ethical dilemma of using AI in creating art by working on inputs generated from his deceased friend’s personal data.
While AI-created art is gaining popularity, questions about its impact on art and society remain. However, these artists’ contributions show that the possibilities of AI in art are endless and can create thought-provoking art pieces that raise questions about our relationship with machines.
