The 43rd Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) has kicked off with a focus on robotics, coding, and inspiring young scientists in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). The event, held at the Birchwood Hotel’s OR Tambo Conference Centre in Gauteng, South Africa, brought together 330 local young scientists and 20 international participants from countries such as Ghana, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Mexico, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, and Turkey.
To engage and ignite the curiosity of the young scientists, various activities were organized, including captivating science shows by Sci-Enza from the University of Pretoria. These shows aimed to spark wonder and curiosity among the participants. Additionally, the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF), in collaboration with STEMulator, showcased a revolutionary tool designed to inspire children of all ages to explore STEM subjects and careers.
In addition to the exhibit of cutting-edge projects, career-guidance talks were offered to provide insights into the exciting world of STEM. These talks aimed to help young scientists navigate their academic and career choices effectively.
The research projects showcased at this year’s ISF provide a glimpse into the interests and problem-solving abilities of today’s youth. The young scientists tackled a range of topics, from personal academic performance enhancement to improving the lives of pets. These projects reflect the aspirations and concerns of the young minds and resonate with their wider communities.
Speaking about the event, Natasha Sithole, Eskom Acting Group Executive for Government & Regulatory Affairs, highlighted the significance of investments in STEMI to find enduring solutions for the nation’s challenges. She urged the participating learners to keep an open mind and embrace the wisdom of the esteemed judges to push their research projects to new horizons.
The Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, emphasized the importance of investing in the future generation, especially in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation. The Eskom Expo aims to provide a platform for learners to showcase their scientific journey, starting at the school level and progressing to higher levels of competition.
The young scientists participating in the Eskom Expo ISF have the opportunity to win coveted bursaries, cash prizes, valuable tech gadgets, and even real-world work experience. The title sponsor, Eskom, and contributors like Siemens Energy have sponsored bursaries valued at more than R400,000 each, enabling deserving students to pursue engineering studies at a South African university.
Members of the public are invited to witness the impressive projects developed by the young scientists at the Eskom Expo ISF. The exhibition hall is open to the public on Thursday, October 5th, from 15:00 to 17:00 at the Birchwood Hotel.
