White House Omits Mark Zuckerberg from AI Summit With Tech Leaders

Date:

Mark Zuckerberg of Meta was noticeably absent from a meeting between White House officials and CEOs from some of the most forward-thinking AI-driven companies. On Thursday, those companies discussed the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and possible regulations concerning the technology. OpenAI, Alphabet, Anthropic, and Microsoft all joined the meeting at the White House.

A White House official told CNN reporter Donald Judd that Meta had not been invited. “Thursday’s meeting was focused on companies currently leading in the space,” the official said, “especially on the consumer facing product side.”

Releasing ChatGPT in November of last year, OpenAI sparked a competition against tech companies such as Google, who released their own AI chatbot, Bard, in February. AI advancements have been ramping up and Meta has made their own pushes into this space, dedicating the majority of their resources towards AI research and development. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has openly expressed his enthusiasm for AI and the company has invested heavily for this, spending thousands of dollars on the Nvidia chips necessary for generating AI models.

Regulators worldwide are concerned about the risks of AI technology, prompting President Joe Biden to “drop by” the meeting and remind the companies of their “fundamental responsibility to make sure their products are safe and secure before they are deployed or made public.”
