Volkswagen has recently unveiled the upcoming Golf facelift, which brings exciting upgrades, including the integration of ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by OpenAI. While there has been considerable hype around the integration of ChatGPT into Volkswagen cars, the Golf facelift has received less attention. However, the prototype displayed at CES 2024 showcased the mid-cycle refresh of this popular compact model.
The Golf facelift, specifically the GTI version, comes with several notable enhancements compared to the standard Golf. It features sportier styling, an enhanced rear diffuser for improved downforce, larger wheels, and eye-catching red brake calipers. Additionally, Volkswagen has decided to incorporate the large spoiler from the Clubsport variants, further enhancing the Golf’s sporty appeal.
One distinct feature of the facelift is the LED strip positioned at the front, connecting the LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and interrupted by the illuminated Volkswagen badge in the center of the grille. The taillights have been partially camouflaged, suggesting the inclusion of a new light signature.
While the exterior of the car is almost entirely covered in colorful camouflage, the interior of the Golf facelift is fully exposed. The cabin remains largely unchanged, with the exception of a new 15-inch touchscreen display replacing the previous model’s screen. This large screen, similar to the one found in the Tiguan crossover, will control the ChatGPT functions integrated into the Golf. Importantly, physical buttons will still be available, ensuring ease of use for customers.
Volkswagen has partnered with tech firm Cerence to incorporate ChatGPT into the Golf facelift. The chatbot will be capable of responding naturally, answering general knowledge questions, and controlling various car functions like air conditioning, heating, and navigation.
Privacy and data protection are key considerations for Volkswagen. The chatbot’s questions and answers will be instantly deleted and not shared with third parties. Furthermore, ChatGPT will not have access to any vehicle information, such as speed, location, or destination.
Volkswagen plans to extend the integration of ChatGPT to other models as well. The ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.4, alongside the Tiguan and upcoming Passat, which are built on the MEB and MQB Evo platforms, will all be equipped with the OpenAI developed chatbot.
The facelifted Golf is expected to be unveiled later this year and will be available for sale in Europe in the fall of 2024. It’s worth noting that this will be the last combustion engine-powered Golf, as Volkswagen aims to introduce electric-only variants in the next generation, anticipated to launch in 2028.
