New AI technology has been implemented in Utah schools to enhance safety measures and detect firearms on campus. Summit County School District is utilizing a system known as Zero Eyes, which utilizes artificial intelligence to scan existing security cameras for unholstered guns.
With approximately 650 cameras in school buildings, the system operates 24/7 and sends immediate alerts to an operations center in Hawaii if a weapon is spotted. This allows for a quick response from school officials and law enforcement to address any potential threats.
The district emphasizes that Zero Eyes is strictly a detection platform, not a surveillance tool, and does not retain images of students. The goal is to create a secure learning environment without disrupting the educational experience for teachers and students.
In the event of an incident, the system’s integrated Aegix platform ensures that school staff and local authorities are promptly informed, preventing misinformation from spreading. The focus is on maintaining a safe and welcoming school environment while prioritizing student welfare.
