Online dating has been a tricky business, but now technology might make it easier. The introduction of ChatGPT, an artificially intelligent chatbot developed by OpenAI, is said to improve users’ chances of finding a match.
This was put to the test when this author attempted to make their Hinge dating profile more attractive by using ChatGPT. Despite the less-than-human sounding prompts created by the AI, I managed to bag a date. On a Thursday evening in the middle of Manhattan, I got to know a complete stranger in person.
While my date said he had been initially attracted to my profile pictures, the robotic language used by the AI tool was definitely not a turn-on. I had to apologise for the lack of creativity in my replies and explain that I had used ChatGPT to try and boost my chances of dating someone.
Despite the robotic language used in my profile, it seems to have worked in my favour. My date said although he had been somewhat scared by the overly-intellectual responses that ChatGPT had written, it ultimately made him more intrigued and interested in meeting me. On the date, he found that my energy and enthusiasm were quite different to what my dating profile conveyed.
Overall, using ChatGPT on my dating profile secured me a date, but it was a double-edged sword. Yes, I got the date, but it was at the cost of seeming “boring” online. ChatGPT is best used for its common purpose in creating software applications – such as writing resumes and synopses – rather than for producing attractive dating profiles. Using ChatGPT may help to improve a profile, however, it is important to ensure that it still conveys the user’s personality in order to be genuinely successful in finding dates online.
