Unlocking the Power of Generative AI in Video Games

At the GamesBeat Summit, a handful of experts in the AI industry came together to discuss the potential of generative AI in games. Beamable’s Jon Radoff, Inworld AI’s Kylan Gibbs, Berkeley Synthetic’s Matt White, and Hidden Door’s Hilary Mason all came to weigh in on the current and future possibilities of incorporating AI into video games.

Using AI within games for something like overseeing the experience can be more complicated than even a human could manage. However, when it comes to creating content, the potential of AI can drastically reduce the workload of developers while also providing players with unique experiences. Take the online shooter game Destiny 2, for example, where the player’s exploration of its open world is fun for a while, but eventually could become predictable. If AI were to be integrated into the game, an AI-generated content administrator could mix and match content for players, or even change the scale of events based on how many people are in the area.

Hidden Door leverage this concept of AI-generated content facilitates to strive with their business model. Mason echoed the importance of AI’s capabilities, reiterating that trying to manually create similar experiences to what AI enables “would have to put a human inside of it”.

Fragmentation in the generative AI space is still a problem, however, according to Matt White. AI researchers tend to create something and then abandon it instead of capitalizing on it, leading to a variety of ideas and innovations not having a proper platform to thrive on. This is similar to the current market state of virtual reality, as well as the proposed Metaverse.
