Israeli Firm STOIC Used AI To Sway Indian Elections: OpenAI Report
Following the recent revelations from OpenAI regarding Israeli firm STOIC’s alleged use of artificial intelligence to influence Indian elections, Union Minister of Electronics and Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar has responded, expressing concerns over the potential threat to democracy.
Chandrasekhar emphasized that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was a clear target of these influence operations, labeling the situation as a significant danger to the democratic process. He called for a thorough investigation into the matter, asserting that vested interests both within India and abroad were behind these attempts to manipulate public opinion.
It is absolutely clear and obvious that BJP4India was and is the target of influence operations, misinformation, and foreign interference, Chandrasekhar stated. This is a very dangerous threat to our democracy. It is clear that vested interests in India and outside are clearly driving this and needs to be deeply scrutinized, investigated, and exposed.
The Union Minister also criticized the timing of the revelations, suggesting that these platforms could have released the information sooner rather than close to the end of the elections. He emphasized the importance of addressing this issue promptly to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
The growing concerns over foreign interference and the use of advanced technologies to influence political outcomes underscore the need for enhanced transparency and accountability in the digital sphere. As the debate continues on how to regulate online activities to prevent such manipulative practices, ensuring the fairness and validity of elections remains a top priority for democratic nations worldwide.
