A revolutionary new audio component could revolutionize the market for earbuds, as xMEMS Labs introduces the world’s first solid-state speakers. These tiny, cutting-edge devices are replacing outdated coil and magnet technology and offer a range of features and advantages, including higher sound quality, greater durability, and smaller size.
The Cowell speaker from xMEMS is the world’s smallest solid-state micro speaker, the Montara Plus offers the highest output, and the Skyline DynamicVent enables advanced adaptive noise cancelling. But how do these compare with your average consumer earbud?
I got the chance to experience these speakers first-hand with Mike Housholder, VP of marketing and biz dev at xMEMS Labs, and the difference was remarkable. Instead of the normally crummy sound offered by regular earbuds, the prototype xMEMS speakers provided much greater clarity, range and depth of sound. Listening to Kacey Musgraves’ “Slow Burn” I heard details that I had previously missed.
The secret behind the speakers’ sound quality is the thin film Piezo technology, which uses electrical impulses and mechanical movement to create sound. This makes the speakers 40% smaller and 90% lighter than regular drivers and completely removes the need for cumbersome coils and magnets.
xMEMS Labs is already shipping the components for these speakers and are expecting products to be available soon. Starting from under $200, users soon can look forward to having audiophile-level sound quality at a price they can afford.
xMEMS Labs was founded in 2019 as a spin-off from the CAClab at the University of Copenhagen. The company enables the miniaturization, integration, and commercialization of MEMS technologies. Under the leadership of CEO Peter Bak, the company’s focus is on developing advanced solutions that utilize piezo tech and MEMS based solutions. With their groundbreaking solid-state speakers, they are continuing to take the audio industry by storm.
Mike Housholder has long established himself as a leader in the audio industry. He previously held positions at both Gibson and Shure, working on marketing and R&D for some of their major product lines. With his expertise in audio, marketing, and engineering, Housholder is currently driving the vision for xMEMS Labs to become the market leader in innovative sound solutions.
