Apple CEO Tim Cook has voiced his thoughts about the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the tech industry. During the company’s recent earnings call, Cook said that AI today has “huge,” potential and requires a thoughtful approach to determine when and where to deploy it. He highlighted certain applications where Apple is already using AI, such as the “fall detection” and “crash detection” features on the Apple Watch and certain devices respectively.
Cook’s statements appear rather restrained when compared to what other tech giants such as Microsoft and Google have been doing with their own AI products. OpenAI’s ChatGPT as well as Bing and Google’s Bard have been making lots of buzz in the industry and are examples of AI approaches making progress.
Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has voiced his concerns about the potential for the misuse of generative AI technology for creating misinformation. Altman’s statement coincide with the need for caution on how these AI systems should be used, an opinion which Apple CEO Tim Cook shares. Despite this, Cook has declined to comment on Apple’s future product roadmaps and spoke comparatively briefly of AI in the company’s earnings call when compared to other tech companies.
