TikTok Introduces Labeling for AI-Generated Content to Combat Misinformation

Date:

TikTok has announced plans to introduce labels for content produced using artificial intelligence (AI) to combat misinformation spreading on its platform. This move aims to provide transparency to viewers about the origin of content and prevent confusion or deception.

In a statement, TikTok highlighted the creative potential of AI but emphasized the need to clarify when content is AI-generated to avoid misleading viewers. The platform has already been requiring creators to label realistic AI-generated content for over a year.

The tech industry as a whole is working towards implementing safeguards for AI usage. Meta recently revealed its collaboration with industry partners to establish technical standards for identifying AI-generated images, while Google announced plans to introduce AI labels on YouTube and other platforms.

TikTok is partnering with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity to leverage its Content Credentials technology, enabling the attachment of metadata to AI-generated content. This technology will facilitate the recognition and labeling of AI-generated content, starting with images and videos and expanding to audio-only content in the future.

By attaching Content Credentials to content made on TikTok, the platform aims to provide users with information about when, where, and how the content was created or modified. This initiative aligns with the efforts of the Content Authenticity Initiative led by Adobe to promote transparency online.

As the first video-sharing platform to implement Content Credentials, TikTok is taking a proactive step towards enhancing transparency and trust in online content. With over 170 million users in the United States alone, TikTok’s adoption of this technology is expected to set a precedent for other social media platforms.
