This week on Gadget Lab, we are exploring a new technology – AI voice cloning services. These services allow users to input text and generate a robotic version of their own voices. The technology is seen by some as a way to make it easier for content creators to fix mistakes, read ads, or perform mundane tasks. Others, however, warn of the potential to weaponize these services, stealing identities, scamming people and creating malicious content disguised as a person’s voice.
We have asked Wired staff writer and podcast producer Boone Ashworth to give us insight into his experiments with voice cloning AI. In addition to his story you can check out some of the recent coverage of artificial intelligence.
Boone suggests the Arte Concert “Passengers” playlist on YouTube, Mike The New York Times Presents: The Legacy of J Dilla, a documentary on FX and Hulu, while Lauren recommends starting Succession – from the beginning – from HBO.
Boone Ashworth can be reached on Twitter @BooneAshworth, and Lauren Goode at @LaurenGoode with Michael Calore at @snackfight and Gadget Lab’s hotline @GadgetLab. Theme music for the podcast is provided by Solar Keys and the show is produced by Boone Ashworth.
