In an interview following Tesla’s 2023 Annual Shareholder Meeting, CEO Elon Musk shared details about the artificial intelligence (AI) involved in Full Self-Driving (FSD) and praised its progress. Musk believes that FSD has the potential to capture the public’s attention in a similar way to the recent popularity of ChatGPT.
While Tesla has delayed delivery timelines for FSD in the past, Musk is confident that it will happen eventually. He expects Tesla’s advancements in real-world AI, or artificial general intelligence (AGI), through Full Self-Driving to have a huge impact, especially with the advent of the Tesla Bot.
Tesla has accumulated an immense amount of autonomous driving data from its cars with FSD beta in the two years from March 2021 to March 2023. According to Tesla, cars have driven around 200 million miles since FSD beta first rolled out.
Musk believes that FSD will be much better than human driving. He anticipates that when it is capable of driving like a human, millions of Tesla owners will want it instantly. Musk thinks that Tesla AI’s evolution into AGI with FSD will increase the value of Tesla cars significantly. He also believes that no other car company is currently within Tesla’s reach in the AI race.
Being able to do a software update and having several million cars suddenly go from manual driving to autonomous will be the single biggest asset-value increase in history, Musk said. Suddenly, three million cars will be able to drive themselves home, then five million, and then ten million.
Musk’s positive sentiment towards FSD and AGI could prove to be a significant advantage for Tesla over other car manufacturers. The rise of autonomous driving technology could transform the industry as we know it and, with Musk’s ambitions, Tesla could be the company to lead the charge.
