The University of Bergen (UiB) is one of the leading universities in Norway. With its unique offer of eight individual courses, UiB is a rare sight even in the European context. These courses provide a platform to build digital understanding, knowledge, and competence with no prior knowledge. The courses give 2.5 credits (ECTS) and classes are available in the afternoon or evening, so as not to clash with other teaching.
Since fall 2022, around a thousand students of UiB have already taken advantage of the opportunity offered by the DIGI course package. This fall, UiB will be adding two new courses of medical data science and language technology. This package will also be accessible to UiB employees.
DIGI116 Medical Data Science provides students with different backgrounds the opportunity to understand how Artificial Intelligence and data science revolutionizes the health care sector, with smartwatches and other sensors collecting information giving rise to less invasive and more effective treatments. The students get to explore the technical challenges and opportunities across human lifespan – from cradle to grave.
The course DIGI117 Language Technology helps students understand what a computer is capable of in terms of analyzing data, how to interact with AI and computer programs and the technology behind ChatGPT.
UiB Rector Pinar Heggernes emphasizes the need for good digital insight regardless of the sector, and how this knowledge adds value to all the 185 study programs offered.
All in all, the unique course package with its addition of new medical and language technology courses provides an appropriate platform for students, employees and the general population to learn about the technologies behind ChatGPT, data science and personalised medicine. This reinforces UiB’s proven track record in utilizing digitalized and technological progress towards improving education and health.
