UK-based startup Synthesia has raised $90m in a Series C funding round, led by Accel and featuring Nvidia, Kleiner Perkins, GV, Firstmark Capital, and MMC. The firm’s AI-driven avatar creation tech can generate synthetic video content for use across a range of industries, with customers including IHG, Moody’s Analytics, and Tiffany. Synthesia was valued at $1bn post-money following the round, up from $300m in December 2021. The company’s AI is trained on real actors and creates instructional videos featuring stock or bespoke avatars. Founder and CEO Victor Riparbelli said the investment would go towards making the avatars more expressive and the Synthesia platform faster and more collaborative. Concerns have, however, been raised over use of the tech to create deepfakes.
