Students and parents opt for ChatGPT as effective tutoring tool

Date:

A recent study conducted by Intelligent.com, an educational planning platform, revealed a new preference for tutoring tools among high school and college students. The chatbot known as ChatGPT has become more popular than human tutors for its ability to provide efficient and convenient studying assistance. The study surveyed 3,017 students between the ages of 16-24 and 3,234 parents of younger students, who expressed their satisfaction with the tool. Although only a small percentage of respondents reported using both human tutors and ChatGPT, 91% of students and 85% of parents said they preferred this artificial intelligence tool to the traditional tutoring method.

The study found ChatGPT particularly useful for math and science subjects when students have an adequate background knowledge base to prompt appropriate responses. According to Diane Gayeski from Intelligent.com, ChatGPT’s ability to offer clear, concise answers to complex technical questions is a significant part of its effectiveness.

The advantages of ChatGPT include its availability 24/7, its ability to respond immediately to questions, and the ability of students to set their preferred pace while reviewing information. Johnson Adegoke, a college junior who currently uses ChatGPT, emphasized the importance of its availability and convenience. Although they acknowledged the advantages of in-person tutoring, they valued the accessibility, flexibility, and reliability provided by ChatGPT.

The study also showed that although some students and parents valued the human touch, the majority preferred the relaxed and efficient learning environment facilitated by ChatGPT. In addition, 39% of students and 30% of parents who participated in the study replaced human tutors with ChatGPT.

The study’s findings suggest that it is preferable to use ChatGPT as a complementary tool alongside human tutors. The latter is still recommended for benefits like structuring study time, providing motivation, diagnosing learning obstacles, and tailoring explanations and practice accordingly.
