Additionally, Microsoft discovered infrastructure hacking activity by the Chinese hacker group Volt Typhoon, which targeted U.S. military infrastructure in Guam.
The Canadian government has also voiced concerns about the rising use of AI by hackers. Sami Khoury, Canada’s top cybersecurity official, revealed evidence suggesting that malicious actors were employing AI to refine their attack methods, develop malicious software, and create highly convincing phishing emails. This warning aligns with a report by Europol, the European police organization, which highlighted the potential for deceptive tactics through AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, enabling hackers to impersonate individuals or organizations convincingly.
The National Cyber Security Centre in the UK has similarly cautioned about the risks associated with AI use in hacking, asserting that language models could extend the capabilities of cyber attacks beyond their current limitations.
