Spotify is expanding its AI-powered DJ feature to Premium customers in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The new feature is designed to improve the user experience and help them discover great music. OpenAI’s technology is powering the AI DJ feature, providing users with a commentary in the English language as they listen. Tuning into music with AI DJ feels like having a radio DJ on the other side — entertaining, interesting, and educative.
The company’s team launched the feature a month back in the U.S. and Canada and Gen Z demographic has welcomed it with arms wide open. The company reported that out of all the DJ users, 87 percent were belonging to the Gen Z demographic. It further stated that users who listened to their AI DJ on a particular day spend 25 percent of their whole day listening to the feature.
The AI DJ feature is also designed to promote new releases on the platform, like the new album “My Soft Machine” by Arlo Parks. This feature is made possible due to the combination of two technologies — one from Sonatic which the company acquired in 2022 and the other one from OpenAI. The AI DJ feature can be accessed through the music feed on both Android and iOS platforms.
Moreover, after a bit of research, it was learnt that the AI DJ feature has been modeled after Xavier Jernigan, the Head of Cultural Partnerships at Spotify. Lastly, the feature has been designed to learn more about the user’s choice of music as they listen to more and more music.
