South Korean Moon Mission: Latest Photos Captured by Lunar Orbiter Danuri of Moon’s Far Side

Date:

South Korea’s Lunar Orbiter Danuri has sent awe-striking pictures of the moon’s far side, as it was assigned to travel 100 km above the moon’s surface and collect selenographic data. The mission was conducted by the science ministry and Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). These are the first photographs of the moon’s far side South Korea has taken. In addition to these pictures, Danuri sent separate photos taken by its wide-angle polarimetric camera, PolCam, designed to analyze the moon’s surface composition and its volcanic deposits through gauging the polarisation levels.

This unmanned space vehicle, which entered its selenocentric orbit on December 27 after 145 days of journeys from the Earth, finally started its operation on February 4. Its mission was to identify possible landings for future lunar missions and it was also assigned to assess the magnetic strength, terrain, gamma rays and other features of the moon’s terrain, utilizing its six on-board instruments.
