Smartphone cameras have allowed users to capture incredibly detailed images of landscapes, people, and even the night sky. But just how much detail can they really capture of the moon, the biggest night sky wonder of all? This is a question that technology YouTuber Marques Brownlee and users on Reddit have been exploring.
Brownlee recently set out to find the answer in a video, demonstrating the capabilities of a Samsung Galaxy S-23 Ultra smartphone camera. He used its 100X zoom to take an up-close shot of the moon and it proved fairly successful. However, it’s worth noting that the superb image quality could be down to more than just the optics; it may, in fact, be the result of the camera’s AI software, too.
A user on Reddit, ibreakphotos, put this to the test and discovered that the camera could even take a crisp and detailed image of a blurry shot of the moon on a computer monitor. This AI-based ‘scene optimization technology’ can identify the moon as the main object and take multiple shots of it, then enhance the detail and colors of the image. Brownlee confirmed this in a follow-up video.
Smartphone cameras have a level of sophistication that was not possible using film cameras. The job of the photographer to adjust the settings on the camera and its film is being done by the phone’s AI software. It helps to create an image that looks better than what is actually seen by the human eye. This may be why some people have the perception that their smartphone cameras are capturing an image that is too detailed.
