California-based company Smalo Bikes is set to revolutionize the cycling industry with its newly unveiled AI-powered LX2 e-bike. Smalo, a subsidiary of BESV, a well-established brand since 2013, is leveraging its parent company’s expertise to create a unique and functional e-bike experience. With Smalo’s incorporation of artificial intelligence, the LX2 aims to redefine what is possible in the world of cycling.
The highlight of the LX2 is its Smalo Smart Mode, a proprietary system that seamlessly controls the bike’s shifting experience through its 7-speed gears. This AI-powered feature ensures that each pedal stroke generates the necessary power to conquer any terrain. The LX2’s frame is made of lightweight aluminum, weighing in at 51 lbs (23 kg) when loaded with electronics.
The LX2 is equipped with a 250 W front motor and a Shimano Nexus 7 geared hub for effortless shifting. Its integrated downtube houses a 504 Wh battery, offering a range of up to 74 miles (119 km) on optimized rides. The bike’s speed is capped at 20 mph (32 kph), but it may be possible to adjust the limit through software modifications.
In terms of design, the LX2 features an elevated cockpit to provide riders with a more comfortable and upright position, unlike traditional urban e-bikes. Its 28-inch wheels and Schwalbe Big Apple Perf tires with a 50 mm cross-section ensure a smooth ride over various surfaces, including gravel roads. Smalo has developed an accompanying app that allows riders to track their LX2, monitor battery levels, plan routes, and utilize the Smalo Smart Mode’s optimized routing feature. Customers can pre-order the LX2 for $2,680 (€2,500 at current exchange rates) and expect deliveries in 2024. Smalo offers a 15-day return policy for unsatisfied customers, with no questions asked.
