Sam Altman’s Opinion on Tech Leaders’ Call for AI Pause

Date:

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is in partial agreement with the call to pause in the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by tech leaders like Apple and Twitter CEO, but urges them to move with caution. During an event at MIT, the top official of the tech firm mentioned that while the letter was not the optimal way to address the situation, taking in account the issues associated with advanced AI development is of utmost priority.

OpenAI, who created ChatGPT, a AI-powered chatbot was fast becoming popular and drawing competition from other tech giants with their own chatbots. OpenAI’s chatbot was designed to provide human-like responses to users’ questions. Then came the letter signed by over 25,000 tech experts and academics persuading for an immediate halt in the ‘experiments’ related to these large language models.

Altman agreed with the letter in terms of an increasing rigor for the safety issues and urged the need for independent outside experts to audit and oversee the shared safety protocols for AD development. Elon Musk on the other hand, is reportedly advancing an AI-based project at Twitter and hiring AI engineering talent.
