OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently addressed a letter signed by a coalition of tech leaders, including Twitter CEO Elon Musk, which called for a pause on powerful AI experiments. When Altman was asked his stance on the letter during a virtual event at MIT, he said the letter had good intentions but wasn’t the optimal way to handle the issue.
The letter, which was organized by the Future of Life Institute, promoted ethical AI development and asked developers to take a break from experiments involving AI models more powerful than GPT-4 that could potentially be dangerous. Altman agreed with the safety components of the letter, noting that his OpenAI team took six months to research safety elements before the release of ChatGPT 4.
Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and over 1,000 other tech leaders signed the letter, which proposed a six-month break for all AI developers. Additionally, the letter asked for protocols involving independent outside experts who would audit and oversee the design and development of AI to ensure it would be positive and reflect manageable risks.
Although the pause was provoked, Musk and other technology experts believe the appetite to develop AI should not be halted. With the ability to rapidly progress, it is vital that AI is managed and safety protocols are set in place.
In an exclusive two-part interview with Tucker Carlson, Musk discussed the potential destruction AI can cause. He noted it is more dangerous than mismanaged aircraft design, car production, and other related elements.
OpenAI is a research laboratory founded and sponsored by the likes of Microsoft, Musk and other tech giants, whose mission is to ensure safe and beneficial AI remains a reality and not a theoretical product of fiction. The organization focuses on advancing and understanding AI so it can be used as a tool for expanding and enlarging human capabilities.
