UK-based startup, Bayezian, has developed a new algorithm that can accurately and quickly detect male infertility. One in six couples globally is currently affected by infertility, and while women are often perceived as the primary factor, men contribute to 50% of fertility problems. Recent research has also found that sperm counts have decreased by over 50% in the past 45 years, with a doubling of the rate of decline since 2000. Furthermore, getting a diagnosis for male infertility can be slow and expensive, with inconclusive results. Bayezian was approached for help on developing a better fertility testing system and applied artificial intelligence (AI) to the problem. Using the MHSMA dataset, a collection of sperm images from 235 patients, Bayezian built deep learning frameworks that can spot a sperm’s morphology. This algorithm can reportedly identify sperm fertility with an accuracy rate of 96%, which is 2% more accurate than existing approaches.
