Research Reveals Up to 80% of US Workforce Could Be Impacted by AI

Date:

New research suggests that 80 percent of the US workforce could be affected by AI. OpenAI, OpenResearch and the University of Pennsylvania published a paper that argues that GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformers) technology has the potential to greatly reduce the amount of labor or even displace some of them. Nearly 20 percent of the workers exposed to GPT could have at least 50 percent of their tasks automated and completed in less time.

The paper also stated that the implementation of GPT tech could also have great socio-economic implications that need to be considered. The language processing ChatGPT created by OpenAI has sparked both interest and concerns about the potential impact of AI on people’s work, from grades in school to digital designs.

OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research laboratory focused on creating beneficial applications of AI and consistent progress towards a safe general AI. Founded in December 2015, the group of researchers and engineers are committed to detecting issues and addressing them before they become serious problems. OpenAI seeks to improve collaboration between AI, business and policy by developing a platform with expertise that allows interactions with all three.

Geoffrey Hinton, sometimes referred to as the “father” of AI, is a British-born Canadian computer scientist, professor and entrepreneur. He holds the position of vice-president in Google’s engineering division. He is widely recognized for his work on neural networks and deep learning. He invented Boltzmann machine, which is already widely used, and was the first to popularize backpropagation for training artificial neural networks. He won the Turing Award, one of the highest distinctions in computer science, with research partner Yann LeCun in 2018.
